KY-Sen: NRSC Preparing To Torpedo Bunning
by Arjun Jaikumar aka brownsox
Mon Feb 23, 2009 at 10:40:03 AM PST
One of the worst-kept secrets in Washington is that Senate Republican leadership desperately wants Kentucky Sen. Jim Bunning to go home quietly.
Bunning has had an extremely rocky tenure in the Senate, marked by weak fundraising, vile statements about Supreme Court Justices and a reelection campaign so disastrous that national news media called his mental fitness into question.
The state and national Democratic parties are salivating over the prospect of squaring off against Bunning in 2010, and two very strong Democrats are expected to step up for the race (Lieutenant Governor Daniel Mongiardo, who is already in, and Attorney General Jack Conway).
The Republicans, for their part, are sufficiently determine to oust one of their own that they're recruiting primary candidates behind closed doors.
Kentucky state Senator David Williams (R) has met with officials at the National Republican Senatorial Committee, sources confirm to The Hill, as he begins to actively consider a bid for Sen. Jim Bunning's (R-Ken.) seat.
NRSC chairman John Cornyn has already let it be known to anyone with an ounce of perception (a list of people which apparently does not include Sen Bunning) that he wants Bunning out. So has his boss, and Bunning's Kentucky elder, senior Sen. Mitch McConnell.
They haven't taken the brazen step of actively recruiting a challenger and apparently letting it leak to the media. Not until now, anyway.
It must doubly sting Bunning that the NRSC is looking to replace him with a second-tier candidate, with a limited statewide profile:
Williams served a term in the Kentucky state House before moving to the state Senate in 1987. He is the president of the state Senate, and he has at least some statewide experience -- Williams was the GOP nominee for Senate in 1992, against Sen. Wendell Ford (D-Ken.), though he won just 36 percent.
Republican sources said Williams would be a stronger candidate than he was against Ford, calling him "extremely talented" despite some baggage after a decade atop the state Senate.
Of course, the NRSC insists that they have no intention, zero, of stabbing one of their own in the back:
"The NRSC is not and will not recruit against Sen. Bunning," said NRSC communications director Brian Walsh.
Of course not! Hey, Jim, we weren't cheating on ya, I swear! Me and David Williams, we're just good friends! You know I love ya, baby!

I don't know how many times I have had to listen to some blather about Bunning being a hall of hame pitcher who threw a no-hitter blah, blah, blah.
Now, he's a liability and they can't wait to shiv him and get him off the national stage fast enough.
I hope the same competitive fire that made him a hall of fame pitcher now drives him to run and run bitterly and negatively at all costs until the very end of the primary.
And then, we can run against the exhausted and damaged shell in the final and take that damned seat.

would be an equally terrible choice to make to run for 2010. Trey Greyson would probably be a better choice for them, but I could see him staying put for a bit until the Republican brand improves somewhat.
Williams is our very own obstructionist in the Bluegrass and has an uncanny ability to make an utter ass of himself, so he would be a better fit for the national GOP, but he might not have enough to win statewide.

I would guess that the short list would be David Williams, Anne Norhtup, or maybe one of the other yahoos that make up the Congressional group. Each one of those is too extreme or just not a good candidate when paired against the deep Kentucky bench for Democrats. Greyson is the only one that would be able to easily win, though again the tarnished Republican brand would be a major hurdle.

To wit: the maps here (look at KY)
http://elections.nytimes.com/...
The state as a whole moved a bit more Dem, (+16 R instead of +20 R). But a whole bunch of counties in eastern KY shifted dramatically more R, 20-30 points in many cases.
Take that factor out and the picture may be different.
The Governor for example is a Dem, won by 17 points in 07.

David Williams is my state senator and I don't want him moving up to the national level! Actually with the "baggage" this guy has he may be as easy to beat as Bunning!

Depends on your interests.
If you go in April-The spring horse racing meet at Keeneland is good for a fun day.
History/food-Tour and eat at Pleasant Hill or Shakertown about 30 miles south of Lexington. Beautifully restored histroric 19th century village. Some of the best food in the state in the dining room.
The Ky Horse Park just north of Lexington is very interesting.
There are historic and well know distilleries located all over central KY (limited free samples).
Hiking/outdoors-The Red River Gorge and Natural Bridge State Park are about 1 hour east of Lex.
Historic homes of Mary Todd Lincoln, John Hunt Morgan and Henry Clay in Lexington. Pioneer era forts at Boonesboro and Harrodsburg.

Thanks! (0+ / 0-)
We're definitely going to sample some Buffalo Trace and Four Roses bourbon.
Red River Gorge and Natural Bridge look great. We're both (my wife and I) are Civil War buffs, so the John Hunt Morgan house seems cool too.
Thanks again!

Does it make sense to register Republ. for this? (0+ / 0-)
I quickly found out via Google that Kentucky is a closed primary, unfortunately. But would it make sense for a quiet kind of "reverse Rush Limbaugh move" (when he was telling Republicans to vote for HRC in the primaries)and ask Kentucky Democrats to re-register as Repubs and vote for Bunning in the primaries. From scanning the website below, I can't tell if that would affect their chance to vote for the Dem in the November election.
